One of the effects of the current crisis has been to make us aware of some of the limitations in our society, that we cannot cope as well as we thought – in the medical, and economic fields to name just two. But it has underlined the importance of relationships and connectedness.
The Beatles memorably sang ‘All you need is love’. And St Paul writing to the church in Corinth explains what this looks like in chapters 12 & 13. In chapter 12 he reminds the Corinthians, who were a fairly independently minded lot, to honour and care for everybody, even/particularly those apparently unimportant.
And in chapter 13 he tells us how to do it in words many of us know well;
If I do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal
…. I am nothing …… I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
It does not dishonour others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered,
it keeps no record of wrongs.
Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails.
Have a good day.
