September at St Mary’s

Autumn is almost upon us. As we make the most of the last few weeks of light evenings, we give thanks for the success of our summer activities – Holidays at Home, Pyramid Rock, Getting Active – and we look forward to Heritage Weekends, to Harvest Festival, to the new youth club youth@thetowers. Please pray for the success of all these ventures

St Mary’s chosen charity for September-October is BLOODWISE https://bloodwise.org.uk/  Last year’s appeal proved very successful in raising funds in memory of Diane and Patti . The charity has an aim of creating a future without blood cancer, which sadly was the condition they both succumbed to. Last year Gary Wells completed the Land’s End to John O’Groats cycle ride, under the Bloodwise banner, which resulted, along with our support, in us being able to present a cheque for £4000 to them. This year he is riding in the London to Paris event, again supporting BLOODWISE. As last year our stand in church will provide updates and further information.

Dusters at the ready! Come and join the cleaning crew
Saturday 1st September (and every 1st Saturday) from 10am
Our recent plea for help with church cleaning has resulted in several initiatives
– weekly cleaning will continue but only a few areas are covered this way
– Cleaning Crew will now run every month on the 1st Saturday. Please join in.
– brass cleaning has been allocated to specific people / groups
– cleaning prior to weddings/funerals/events. Several people have signed up to help with this and will be called as and when required

Our chosen Charity for November-December is DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal   www.dec.org.uk/appeal/east-africa-crisis-appeal Hunger on a massive scale is looming across East Africa. Drought and conflict have left 19 million people in urgent need of food, water and medical treatment. People are already dying in South Sudan and Somalia. In Kenya and Ethiopia, water shortages caused by drought are severe and likely to worsen. Women, children and older people are suffering the most; half a million children under five are at risk of dying from severe acute malnutrition and require immediate lifesaving treatment. Diseases such as cholera and measles are spreading fast, as more people flee fighting and are forced to live in poor overcrowded conditions. DEC member charities are responding to the crisis and delivering life-saving aid. But, they need more money to help reduce the scale and severity of the crisis.

So much to celebrate….

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came to our Celebration Weekend on 16th/17th September, to everyone who took part in the *800 and counting* challenge and to everyone who supported the fund-raising events along the way.

Saturday was a fabulous day of celebration with singers, dancers, poetry, artwork to buy, crafts to view.  We had performances by 60s band Alive and Well, Elvis, Chris & Charlie, Angel Voices.  The church bells rang.  The back of church was transformed into a busy café and a fabulous array of cakes and rolls were on offer.  The place just buzzed with excitement and anticipation.

All those who had taken part in the *800 and counting* challenge had been invited to come along this weekend to tell us how they “grew the money” and to bring the proceeds of their endeavours.  We had a special area set up to welcome them, to record their activities / events / talents  and to receive the money.

On Sunday we had a Special Celebration Service.  We heard about the past 800 years and at least 69 priests.  We gave thanks for everyone who has taken part in the challenge and the celebration, for all the priests in Buckden over the last 800 years, for Jes our current priest, for the money raised which will contribute to our Restoration Appeal and for the fun that has been had by all over the 5 months of the challenge.  We were able to announce that our  £800 had already grown to over £8,000 with more contributions still to come.
