We start the month with some very good news – during the last week of July-2017 we were awarded a grant of £40,000 (the maximum available) from the Amey Community Fund. This money supplements the ongoing fund-raising successes of the restoration appeal and allows us to start the essential maintenance work on the tower and repairs to the clock. The first site meeting has already taken place and the work should start by mid-August. See the major projects page for updates
If you were expecting August to be a quiet month, think again. In addition to the start of the building work, we have two Buckden & District Churches Together Holiday Clubs running; one for the young (Pirates Holiday Club) and one for the not-so-young (Holidays at Home). Booking forms are available in church or contact Bookings@stmarysbuckden.org.uk
During August we also have Breakfast with Moths, Getting Active, Going Deeper and *800 and counting* events. See the notice below or our newsletter st marys newsletter aug2017

Our chosen Charity for July-August is Ed Isaac This is very much a local cause. Ed, his wife Emma and their 3 children live in the village. Ed suffered a massive brain haemorrhage and collapsed on his way to work in November 2016. He underwent life-saving surgery and intensive rehabilitation, is currently reliant on a wheelchair and has very limited movement down the left-hand side of his body. Ed returned home to his family in June but their house needs adapting for a downstairs wet room and bedroom; and he will need continuing therapy. A group of friends have been raising money locally to help the Isaacs to become a family once again.
It’s the last week before the summer break for many. At St Mary’s we are looking forward to our two holiday clubs in August:-
Holidays at Home – club for those mature in years but young at heart: 2-5pm on August 7th, 8th, 9th at the Methodist Hall
Pirates Holiday Club for 5 – 11yr olds 9.30am – noon on 22nd, 23rd, 24th August at Buckden School
For either club, contact firstname.lastname@example.org or pick up a form in church.
Daily prayers, Sunday & Wednesday Services, Getting Active and Saturday Coffee will all continue as normal throughout the summer.
From 25th May to 4th June we took part in the Archbishops’ call to all churches to pray for our nation, community and world. As part of this, we had prayer nets out in the church porch and people were invited to add their prayer requests to the nets. Here are some of the things that people asked us to pray for:-
- Victims and perpetrators of terror attacks in London and Manchester
- Police, doctors, nurses and other emergency services
- Appreciation of the NHS. For its many burdens
- Loved ones dying, grieving or suffering loss of faculties
- People involved in recent road accidents
- Worries while waiting for medical tests, procedures and results
- Buckden and its wonderful school
- Families lacking food or money
- Concern for grandchildren in a world needing God’s love
- God’s wisdom for those in positions of leadership
- Christian revival in our nation and God’s will to be done

Restoration Appeal and Major Projects
We continue to pray for success in our grant applications and give thanks for the people who have felt moved to support our beautiful Parish Church. Work on the roof was completed but we are unable to progress any of the other major projects until we have raised substantial funds. Click on the links in the title for more information.

The Open Gardens weekend was a fabulous event enjoyed by villagers and visitors alike. Our thanks go to so very many people : our events team, the helpers, the gardeners and all the visitors. The total raised was in excess of £3,000 for the Restoration Fund.
This coming weekend at St Mary’s we have coffee and cakes on Saturday 24th June 10.30m til noon. Sunday 25th is our fourth Sunday all-age communion 11am at St Mary’s with singing led by Angel Voices. All are welcome to come and join us. For a more traditional service there is BCP Holy Communion at 8am. Sunday evening we have our monthly Open Meeting at 6pm, your chance to come along and have your say. We end the evening with Night Prayer at 7pm.
BIBLE STUDY – We have several options for bible study coming up for anyone who is interested:-
The monthly Monday Bible Group is setting out on a new journey of discovery, with lots of opportunity to participate and learn together. The theme starting next week is Parables in the Gospels and OT. These have layers of deeper meaning to be uncovered. Next meetings: 26 June, 31 July and 25 September then every 4th Monday.
A new Going Deeper bible study group starts on Monday 26 June meeting every week 8 – 9pm at The Horseshoe in Offord. The existing Going Deeper group continues to meet on Wednesday mornings 10.30am in the living stones room. Both groups are looking more closely at the readings from the previous Sunday.
All are welcome to come and try any or all of these groups.
