Don’t miss Buckden Village Carol Service on Tuesday

October at St Mary’s Buckden

September was such a busy month and one of celebration with Heritage Weekend, an Engage Award for our stars on the tower, our *800* Celebration Weekend and Harvest Festival.  As we move into October, renovation work on the building is well under way and much of St Mary’s is covered in scaffolding. We give thanks for everything that we have been able to do and for the very, very many people who have contributed in all sorts of ways.

*800 to 8,000 … and still counting!!*
A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came to our Celebration Weekend on 16th / 17th September, to everyone who helped, to everyone who took part in the *800 and counting* challenge and to everyone who supported the many fund-raising events along the way. Our £800 has grown to over £8,000. Watch out for the final total which will be announced very soon. This is a fantastic boost for our Restoration Appeal.

Our chosen Charity for September-October is BLOODWISE www.bloodwise.org.uk , formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma research. It has an aim to create a future without blood cancer, which sadly has specifically touched 3 of our congregation in recent times.  In September we were asked to sponsor Gary Wells who was riding in the cycle event, “Across Britain”. Gary successfully completed the challenge, after 9 days, on 17th September. The sponsorship known so far is in excess of £1,000; a remarkable result. Sincere thanks to all who have contributed. Our fund-raising for BLOODWISE continues to the end of October so watch out for the next activity. Thank you for your support.

Friends in Deed AGM – Wednesday 11th October 4.15pm in the Living Stones Room

So much to celebrate….

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came to our Celebration Weekend on 16th/17th September, to everyone who took part in the *800 and counting* challenge and to everyone who supported the fund-raising events along the way.

Saturday was a fabulous day of celebration with singers, dancers, poetry, artwork to buy, crafts to view.  We had performances by 60s band Alive and Well, Elvis, Chris & Charlie, Angel Voices.  The church bells rang.  The back of church was transformed into a busy café and a fabulous array of cakes and rolls were on offer.  The place just buzzed with excitement and anticipation.

All those who had taken part in the *800 and counting* challenge had been invited to come along this weekend to tell us how they “grew the money” and to bring the proceeds of their endeavours.  We had a special area set up to welcome them, to record their activities / events / talents  and to receive the money.

On Sunday we had a Special Celebration Service.  We heard about the past 800 years and at least 69 priests.  We gave thanks for everyone who has taken part in the challenge and the celebration, for all the priests in Buckden over the last 800 years, for Jes our current priest, for the money raised which will contribute to our Restoration Appeal and for the fun that has been had by all over the 5 months of the challenge.  We were able to announce that our  £800 had already grown to over £8,000 with more contributions still to come.

800 years – 2017 marks the 800th anniversary of the first recorded priest at St Mary’s Buckden .
800 and counting – in February we launched the “800 and counting” challenge:- If we gave you £10, could you use your talents to grow that money?
800 pounds £££ –  in April we gave £10 each to groups / clubs / families / individuals and invited them to use their talents and expertise to help us to celebrate the 800, have some fun, raise funds and “Grow the money” for our Restoration Appeal.
800 ideas!!!  – How you decided to “grow the money” was entirely up to you.  We just asked that you use your imagination and showcase your talents to the full.
800 celebration weekend – This weekend, 16th/17th September, is when everyone involved in the challenge was invited to return to St Mary’s, to share their successes, to celebrate the 800th anniversary and to bring back the money they have “grown”.

Saturday 16th September 10am to 4pm we have a full programme of FREE entertainment running, displays in church and refreshments available in St Mary’s.  We will be here to receive your money and to hear all about how you “grew it”.
