As we enter July there’s currently something of a heatwave going on. We’re hoping that the weather will hold for all the summer events planned here and throughout the village.
July 7th-8th is festival weekend in Buckden. There will be no coffee & cakes on Saturday and no 11am service in St Mary’s on Sunday but you can come and see us the Holiday Club Stall at the fete (Saturday afternoon) and at the festival service in the village hall (11am Sunday).
See below for events coming up at St Mary’s this month:-
For more information about all events in July, have a look at this month’s newsletter. A copy can be viewed here Newsletter July2018 or you can see all recent newsletters on this website under the INFO tab.
St Mary’s chosen charity for July-August is Buckden village resident, Molly Smith. Following multiple organ transplant 10 years ago she has ‘challenging health’. The funds raised will go towards ramps to enable Molly to spend time in her garden and leave the house as she becomes increasingly dependent on a wheelchair. Look for the display in church or the charities page on this website under the FINANCE tab to find out more.
Preparations for our Holiday Clubs are now well underway.
For the children (5-11 years) we have Pyramid Rock – details and booking form below.
For those mature in years but young at heart we have Holidays at Home 13th-15th August – details to follow

Thank you to everyone who attended the Meeting of the Parishioners and APCM on Sunday 8th April. Those meetings already seem a dim and distant memory. And thanks to everyone who is taking on or continuing with a volunteer role within St Mary’s. We are blessed to have so many willing helpers.
May is looking to be a very busy month with 3 weddings, Ascension Day, a concert, various coffee morning and a number of funerals. Please see the newsletter or the posters below for more details of events in May. Please note that the Friends in Deed Drop-in Café this month will be at The Methodist Church.

Our chosen Charity for May-June is Godmanchester Food Bank http://godmanchester.foodbank.org.uk/ The Trussell Trust foodbank network works in partnership with local churches and organisations to bring foodbanks to communities across the UK. St Mary’s have been a collection point for Godmanchester Foodbank for several years. There is a food collection box near the font for our offerings each week and we also pass donations of dried and tinned food from the schoolchildren at harvest festival each year. Look out for the display in church and more information in the pewsheets this month.
In addition, during May we have Christian Aid week https://www.christianaid.org.uk/. There will be no house-to-house collection in Buckden, but envelopes will be available at the back of church if you wish to make a donation and Buckden & District Churches Together are holding a fund-raising coffee morning on Friday 11th May 10am in the Methodist Hall.

Our chosen Charity for November-December is DEC East Africa Crisis Appeal www.dec.org.uk/appeal/east-africa-crisis-appeal Hunger on a massive scale is looming across East Africa. Drought and conflict have left 19 million people in urgent need of food, water and medical treatment. People are already dying in South Sudan and Somalia. In Kenya and Ethiopia, water shortages caused by drought are severe and likely to worsen. Women, children and older people are suffering the most; half a million children under five are at risk of dying from severe acute malnutrition and require immediate lifesaving treatment. Diseases such as cholera and measles are spreading fast, as more people flee fighting and are forced to live in poor overcrowded conditions. DEC member charities are responding to the crisis and delivering life-saving aid. But, they need more money to help reduce the scale and severity of the crisis.

*800* CELEBRATION WEEKEND
We celebrate the 800th anniversary of the first priest in Buckden as well as the many and varied local talents that have contributed to the *800 and counting* challenge. We hope that all those who have taken part in the challenge to “grow the money” will be returning the proceeds over the weekend.
Saturday 16th Sept Celebration Day – the day will run from 11am to 4pm with food available all day. Elvis is coming to sing for us, as are others who wish to share their talents. Something for everyone we hope. Bring family and friends. Come and Celebrate our *800 and counting events* in our beautiful Church.
Sunday 17th Sept Celebration Service – our 11am Family Service will be a special celebration service giving thanks for 800 years of priests here, for the talents within the village and for the money raised to help maintain our beautiful church building.
In a series of articles published in the Buckden Roundabout, our historian Barry Jobling has guided us through the 800 years of priests recorded in Buckden. His articles will soon be reproduced on this website.
Our chosen Charity for September-October is BLOODWISE www.bloodwise.org.uk , formerly Leukaemia & Lymphoma research. It has an aim to create a future without blood cancer, which sadly has specifically touched 3 of our congregation in recent times. Our campaign starts at the beginning of September by supporting the efforts of Gary Wells, who is riding under the “Bloodwise” banner in the cycle event, Ride Across Britain, which involves 9 daily stages from Land’s End to John O’Groats, a total of almost 1000 miles. We will be looking to get sponsors, for a particular stage, a donation per mile or maybe one you can suggest. The event runs from the 9th to the 17th of September. See our stand in St. Mary’s for more information, plus daily updates once the ride commences. Thank you for your support.
For more information about what’s on at St Mary’s, see our monthly Newsletter 1709 st marys newsletter sept2017
A group from St Mary’s will be taking part in the Cambridgeshire Historic Churches Trust (CHCT) Ride, Drive and Stride event on Saturday 10th September. Some cycling between local churches and starting off from St Mary’s during Coffee & Cakes; others walking between churches in Cambridge. All keeping up the tradition that has been so well established and supported at St Mary’s by Ron and Ken (to name but two).
It is a sponsored event. Half the money we raise goes to CHCT and half directly to St Mary’s. CHCT is any organisation that gives grants to churches undertaking restoration and improvement work – something very relevant to our current situation
If you would like to join in and cycle or walk, please see Anne Carter.
If you unable to join us on the day, then please consider sponsoring us. There is a sponsor form at the back of church or you can sponsor us online using the following link https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Buckden-bikes
