August at St Mary’s

August is traditionally a month of holidays when many of our regular activities are not running.  However, at St Mary’s, it’s not going to be a quiet month as there are lots of special summer activities going on. We join with friends from Buckden & District Churches Together to run two holiday clubs, our Getting Active Walks take advantage of the light evenings and (hopefully) pleasant weather. Please pray for the success of  all these activities.

St Mary’s chosen charity for July-August is Buckden village resident, Molly Smith. Following multiple organ transplant 10 years ago she has ‘challenging health’.  The funds raised will go towards ramps to enable Molly to spend time in her garden and leave the house as she becomes increasingly dependent on a wheelchair. Look for the display in church or the charities page on this website under the FINANCE tab to find out more.

Godmanchester Foodbank, who we support throughout the year with donations of food, is asking for help. With school holidays happening now, again the foodbank is bridging the gap between free school meals and going hungry…. there is no provision for families on low incomes to have extra provision while kids are on holiday and whatever your political thoughts or opinions on people learning to budget, events happen, and money put aside gets gobbles up in emergency uses like flat tyres, unexpected bills, new school uniform and similar. If you are able, please grab an extra tin of veg, packet of pasta, or bottle of squash to help the foodbank.  NO baked beans nor tomatoes needed – we already have lots of them, and thank you.
Yes extra treaty bits like some crisps or sweets is great too as we all like treats on our holidays but the regular stuff matters too please.
thank you

Dusters at the ready! Come and join the cleaning crew
Saturday 4th August from 10am
For many years we have benefited from a dedicated team who clean the church every week. Sadly, numbers have dwindled and new volunteers have not been forthcoming.  We’re looking at new ways to get the work done so join us to clean and to discuss possible solutions

GETTING ACTIVE: It’s a shame to waste all these lovely light summer evenings so why not join us for a walk on a Thursday evening at 7pm? We aim to walk for about an hour, then drop in for a well-earned drink. All are welcome, tell your friends.
Thursday 2nd August: Meet 7pm outside The Lion, Buckden.
Thursday 9th August:  Meet 7pm outside The Horseshoe, Offord.
Thursday 16th August:  Meet 7pm outside  The Wheatsheaf, Perry

So much to celebrate….

A HUGE THANK YOU to everyone who came to our Celebration Weekend on 16th/17th September, to everyone who took part in the *800 and counting* challenge and to everyone who supported the fund-raising events along the way.

Saturday was a fabulous day of celebration with singers, dancers, poetry, artwork to buy, crafts to view.  We had performances by 60s band Alive and Well, Elvis, Chris & Charlie, Angel Voices.  The church bells rang.  The back of church was transformed into a busy café and a fabulous array of cakes and rolls were on offer.  The place just buzzed with excitement and anticipation.

All those who had taken part in the *800 and counting* challenge had been invited to come along this weekend to tell us how they “grew the money” and to bring the proceeds of their endeavours.  We had a special area set up to welcome them, to record their activities / events / talents  and to receive the money.

On Sunday we had a Special Celebration Service.  We heard about the past 800 years and at least 69 priests.  We gave thanks for everyone who has taken part in the challenge and the celebration, for all the priests in Buckden over the last 800 years, for Jes our current priest, for the money raised which will contribute to our Restoration Appeal and for the fun that has been had by all over the 5 months of the challenge.  We were able to announce that our  £800 had already grown to over £8,000 with more contributions still to come.
